et cetera | gaddi torso 1st century bc

based on a second century b.c. prototype, this statue (of which only the torso survives) depicted a centaur with his hands tied behind his back. it was part of a group comprising a young centaur, free and energetic, and an older one ridden by a cupid striking him with a crop. a metaphor of the invincible strength of love, capable of taming even the wild centaurs, the torso with its powerful muscle structure inspired numerous sixteenth and seventeenth century artists, for instance adoration of the shepherds by amico aspertini.
