kiefer's night sky resembles an archive, where each star is identified by its code in the nasa classification system. lines traced to join disparate points draw imaginary constellations. at the foot of the canvass, on the floor, lie glass tabs with codes inscribed: they are the fallen stars, a bridge between the sky above and the ground below. comparison with the visual layout in the works entitled sternen-lager (star storehouses) suggests some reference to the holocaust, the numbered codes reminiscent of the numbers tattooed onto the arms of the jews at the nazi camps. the memory of post events entwines with cosmic visions. compositionally, the work is based on stratified pictorial matter and the fragmentation of formal elements.
